Documents you need for college admission in India: the complete checklist

Marksheets, transfer and migration certificates, category and income certificates, ID and photos — the documents colleges and counselling bodies ask for, and the mistakes that delay admission.

Missing or mismatched documents are one of the most common reasons students lose a seat they've already been allotted. Gather these well before counselling starts, keep originals in one folder and scanned copies on your phone.

Academic documents

  • Class 10 marksheet and certificate — usually accepted as proof of date of birth
  • Class 12 marksheet and passing certificate — or the admit card if results are awaited, with the marksheet submitted later
  • Entrance exam admit card and scorecard — JEE Main, NEET-UG, CUET-UG or whichever exam applies
  • Transfer certificate (TC) from your last school or college
  • Migration certificate — needed when you move from one board or university to another
  • Character certificate from your school principal

Category and quota documents

Only if they apply to you:

  • SC, ST or OBC-NCL certificate — for central institutions, OBC-NCL and EWS certificates usually need to be in the central government format and issued for the right financial year. Check the counselling body's rules on validity dates.
  • EWS certificate — issued for the relevant financial year
  • Disability certificate — issued under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016
  • Domicile or residence certificate — needed for state-quota seats
  • Income certificate — for fee waivers and scholarships

Identity and other documents

  • Aadhaar card or another government photo ID
  • Passport-size photographs — keep eight to ten, with the same photo you used for the exam application
  • Gap certificate or affidavit — if there was a gap year after Class 12
  • Medical fitness certificate — some institutes ask for one at reporting
  • Anti-ragging undertaking — colleges ask students and parents to submit one online, as required by UGC regulations

Mistakes that delay admission

  • Name mismatches. The spelling of your name (and your parents' names) should match across your Class 10 certificate, Aadhaar and exam application. Fix differences early; corrections take time.
  • Expired or wrong-format category certificates. This is the most common reason students lose a reserved seat.
  • Scans that are too large or unreadable. Counselling portals have size limits. Scan in good light and keep each file under the stated limit.
  • Missing originals at reporting. Bring originals plus two sets of self-attested photocopies.

A good counsellor will go through this list with you before choice filling begins, so nothing surprises you at the reporting desk.
